$2k/mo Trash Valet (working 1 day a week)

Welcome to Ghost Business 👻 Your (mostly) weekly email, where we turn $1 into thousands building these weird but simple side hustles

Valet Trash
Where you bin? Garbage is a forever problem. No matter the economy, location, social class, there’s always demand for garbage pick up.
So of course I wasn’t shocked to learn that there’s folks making $2k/mo picking up garbage once a week.
But first what is valet trash service? Valet trash is the “Starbucks” of garbage. Sure, you can make your own solution at home, taking out your own trash/making your own coffee but that’s for peasants.

When you have Valet Trash Service, you can literally just leave whatever garbage outside of your door and someone will come and do the rest.
This works great for folks in condos, town home communities and even gated HOA’s.
So let’s see what kind of garbage we'll have to deal with in scaling our way to trash royalty 👑

The MVP (Getting your first customer)
Phone a friend… I took to Reddit to ask about this side hustle, luckily u/lorenzodamian98 entered the chat and shared how they got started and earned their first customer.
How did you land your first customer u/lorenzodamian98?
“So I found this opportunity through one of my wife's dog walking clients who happens to live in this gated community we both service now. The client came out one day (we rarely see clients in person). We were talking and asked if I had plans to do something myself, and I told my trash valet idea, they said the community could use something like that here and they got me in touch with who does the vendor list and contracts. A few meetings/investment later, they green lit my service, and here we are.”
After digging a little more I found these fun facts:
He charges $35/month/account
Currently at 100 accounts making $3500/mo
He has about $1500/mo in expenses
It takes about 5-8 hours by himself with truck/trailer combo
He works 4-5 days out the month.

Okay this got weird…

Getting Your Next 100 Customers
Stay trashy my friends… This idea got me so jacked I had to spin up a quick landing page and social handle just to get the jitters out. (yes, I have a problem)
I call it Rubbish 😹

Sometimes, all it takes is a landing page, a social handle and less than $100 in paid ads to start getting recurring clients right away…

But I digress, so if we were to scale this to 100 communities/customers what would our tactics look like?
Find the community person in charge of vendor list and contracts. This is who I call your bottle neck person. Some HOAs are company run, where you can find a person/company that manages multiple HOAs and you’ve struck gold.
Search for all the new communities being built and hand deliver flyers to each of the residents and community managers.
Reach out to older communities and see how they like their current service and if they’d be open to learning about a new one in the area.
Offer additional services to clients you can either perform or contract out for a small fee.
Solicit folks on Airbnb by directly messaging hosts in your area.
If you can pull off an additional 100 communities with 100 accounts each, thats 10,000 accounts at $35/account, which could be $350k/mo!!! 🤯

Of course you’d also have higher expenses, but that’s a problem for later you 😉

Nice cans… This idea has ease of access but not ease of work. Even though you may be working only once or twice a month, it will be a TOUGH day of smells, stairs, and streets. But once you can set yourself up with stable/reliable/recurring clients, this can be a VERY lucrative gig!
(As usual each business will have it’s own setbacks, and it’s all about the execution and consistency rather than just having the idea)
It’s a great day to be great!
Love, Mike 👋
