Newsletters are a tricky business but a great way to make money remotely. I am a side hustler at heart so I started this newsletter just out of straight passion.

I needed to get these ideas out of my head and into your eyeballs 👀

But I wanted to start one with just revenue in mind, so I paid $2,000 for a newsletter course to start a fresh newsletter and build it in public (for you).

I love newsletters because:

  • It is remote work, can do this from home

  • You can make significant income

  • It is a sellable asset

So today, I’m going to show you step by step of how I’m building a newsletter from scratch and how I plan scale up to $10,000 a month in revenue👇

Meet Kid Friendly Seattle - We're talking kid-friendly fun around the city, whether it's free or a splurge. Weekly events, hidden gems, and the best family activities delivered straight to your inbox every Tuesday.

p.s if you are a Seattle (or surrounding area) parent, you will actually like this newsletter. I’ve received a ton of positive feedback so far! Definitely check it out

Getting My First Customers

Building a newsletter for parents kinda felt like a cheat code. Being a new parent myself, my phonebook is filled with people who this is meant for.

So I made a signup page and reached out to all my parent, uncle/aunts, and guardian contacts to share what the newsletter was about and to ask them to sign up.

This landed me my first 25 subscribers before my first issue.

Scaling to $10,000 a month

So how do you make money with a newsletter??

There are 4 ways to earn income with a weekly email:

  1. Ad revenue (you see this at the top of my newsletters here (remember to check them out! 😬)

  2. Referrals (many newsletters will pay you to refer folks over to subscribe, this is my second highest revenue stream)

  3. Product or service (I have not tried this, but there’s many blueprints on digital products or services you can sell to your subscribers)

  4. Paid subscription (a monthly paid version of your newsletter)

So to breakdown this $10,000 a month, I’ll break this into a $2,500 weekly chunks:

  • Ads will mostly make up to 60% of my revenue because thats mainly what I know right now ($1,500/week from ads)

  • Referrals will do about 20% ($500/week from referrals)

  • I’ve never sold a product or service via newsletters before so I’ll go low and estimate 5% here ($125/week from sales)

  • This leaves 15% from paid subscribers ($375/week from paid subs)

Okay lets break this down further for what I’ll need to get this kind of revenue, ALGEBRA CLASS IS FINALLY PAYING OFF

  • I get about a 5% click through rate on my ads at about $2 a click. This means I will need about 750 clicks on my ads divided by 5% which is about 15,000 subscribers needed to meet my ad goal

  • I’ll see about $2 per referral (aka email boost) which is set when people subscribe so I’ll need to add 500 new subscribers every week if only 50% of them subscribe to another newsletter to meet my referral goal.

  • I’m not entirely sure how I’ll make up the sales numbers but will need a way to sell about 13 people a $10 product/service 🤔

  • Finally I do have an idea for a paid newsletter in this space (think huge discounts on events and paid outings for paid subscribers) to make up for the $10/month subscription charge. And I’ll be able to get about 150 people on board with a paid newsletter.

All this will make up $2,500 a week or $10,000 a month! I’ll keep breaking this down in emails how I am reaching these goals.

Viability:

1 [building spaceships] 🚀 to 5 [easy peasy] 😊

This is going to be pretty difficult and require a lot of time and posting to different platforms. I think consistency is key here and hopefully I can help layout a blueprint for success for you guys!

(As usual each business will have it’s own setbacks, and it’s all about the execution and consistency rather than just having the idea)

It’s a great day to be great!

Love, Mike 👋
