Talk (dirty) Politics To Me

making $1k from both sides of the aisle

Welcome to Ghost Business - where business ideas go to launch 🚀 or die ☠️

Talkin’ Politics

Political Advertising Dread… Anyone else? 2024, the election year, is coming fast and in a hurry. The election year is more dreaded then the year you turn 45 (recommended colonoscopy year). But how can we turn this election cycle into a money making opportunity?

This original idea came from the founders of AirBnb. When they ran out of money building AirBnb, they decided to sell political cereal during the 2008 election cycle. They made $60k selling Obama O’s and Cap’n McCains.

But how could I do this same same but different? My friend gave me the idea. “Sell those dumb political flags people put on their cars, yards and homes.

BRILLIANT 🤌

I loved the idea for a few reasons:

  • Everyone loves to show who they support and will put it all of their property ✅

  • Politics make people emotional, emotional people spend money on stupid stuff ✅

  • When your opponents supporters see that your supporting X candidate, they want to make sure to show they’re supporting Y candidate ✅

But how could this be built efficiently and elegantly, with low overhead?👇

The End Goal

Political Machine… My dream is to be selling stuff to both sides of a war (not in an actual war, so no, not like a war dog). Launch different sites targeted at both sides of the aisle and direct the right traffic towards the right site, earning a significant income.

So if your selling flags/signs, you can advertise to both sides of any argument. This can be done in politics, religion, etc.

For political flags/signs, would have 3 categories per side:

  1. Funny stuff (Deez Nutz 4 President)

  2. Inspirational stuff (Stronger Together)

  3. Anti-other side stuff (Biden For Resident / Trump = Dump)

So whether you’re on the left or the right, you have a handful of options to purchase.

You can even print-on-demand flags with Printful, so you don’t have to hold any inventory. All of the overhead goes towards ads and design. Below is the exact layout for ~$21/flag

I’ve used Printful a bunch, they’re great for testing out designs and avoiding holding any inventory. You won’t make as much per item vs buying a bunch of inventory and sending it out yourself but it’s a great way to get started.

Sell these Print-on-Demand signs for a 50% markup and you could be making $1k/mo just selling 100 signs 🤯

The MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

Just vote… This would be a fun one to get off the ground using minimum upfront cash. I would create a business page on FB and IG. And start posting design images. These can be simply made from Canva, my favorite design tool.

Funny one:

Inspirational one:

Anti-other guy one:

Blue or red? Politics is a heated topic. So hot, you can’t even bring it up at thanksgiving. Which makes it an ideal industry to sell to. When people get emotional, they make irrational decisions with their money (been there 🙋‍♂️)

After you discover who the 2 main candidates are in this dog and pony show, create the 3 types of flags mentioned above FOR EACH POLITICAL SIDE; funny, inspirational, anti other guy.

You can test out the designs by posting them in political facebook groups to see which ones the people like the most (they will also be your customers 😉)

Scaling Up

Just vote… Selling signs and flags during the main presidential election cycle is enough to get a couple of bucks money in your pocket. So how do we turn sign slangin’ into a real business?

News flash: WE GOT A LOT OF ELECTIONS 🔥

In a general election, you can vote for federal, state, and local officials, including:
  • U.S. senators and U.S. representatives to Congress

  • Governor, lieutenant governor, general assembly, attorney general, auditor general, state treasurer

  • County and city officials (only elected in odd-numbered years)

  • Judges and magisterial district judges (only elected in odd-numbered years)

Think of all the flags and signs you can sell 😍

If I were scaling this up, I would do the below NOW:

  1. Join all of the political facebook and subreddit groups 🤝

  2. Create a unique URL per vote/candidate 🗳️

  3. Make money from both sides 💰

After a while you can start buying in bulk, getting better margins. There’s even a couple of online stores that have templated flags for you; politicallawnsigns.com & crazycheappoliticalsigns.com seem to have some solid bulk pricing.

Viability:

1 [building spaceships] 🚀 to 5 [easy peasy] 😊

4 ghosts

Getting votes… This could be a nightmare to get started. Having to live in political facebook groups might be enough for anyone to veto this side hustle in exchange for keeping their sanity.

But if you DO love politics and making some side $$, this could be the move for you!

(As usual each business will have it’s own setbacks, and it’s all about the execution and consistency rather than just having the idea 😉)

It’s a great day to be great!

Love, Mike
